Kybella Q&A

What is Kybella?

Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable drug that is used to permanently destroy fat cells below your chin, also known as submental fat.

Kybella is made from synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally-occurring stomach acid that helps your body break down and digest fat cells.

A Kybella injection breaks down the membranes of fat cells in your chin and these destroyed cells are removed by your body’s immune system. The result is a noticeable improvement in the shape and profile of your chin. Best of all, the results are permanent.

What does Kybella treatment involve?

Kybella treatments are relatively painless and quick. The team at Defying Time are trained Kybella specialists. They give you multiple, small injections under your chin. The injections feel like pinpricks, and there may be a little “burn.”

To ensure you're comfortable, the team offers ice packs and/or local anesthesia. Your entire treatment takes about 30 minutes.

When will I see the results of Kybella?

The effects of a Kybella treatment are seen over the course of a few weeks as the degraded fat cells are expelled by your body’s immune system.

The number of Kybella sessions you need depends on your chin. Before starting any treatment, you have a consultation with the team to assess your chin and the amount of submental fat that is present. Based on this and your personal goals, the team suggests an appropriate number of sessions.

Most patients don’t require more than six sessions of treatments spaced one month apart.

Are there any side effects of Kybella?

There is usually no downtime needed after a Kybella treatment. You may have some bruising, swelling, and numbness at the site of the injections, but these subside in 24-48 hours.

Kybella can have some side effects, so contact the team if you experience any of the following:

  • Uneven smile
  • Weakness of the facial muscles
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Hair loss, open sores, or nerve damage around the injection site
